Recommendations and calculation aids for fair remuneration for artistic and cultural labour

Art is labour. Labour that has to be remunerated! But to what extent? What is considered fair and adequate? Recommendations for fees have proved a valuable orientation for artists and cultural workers – in Austria as well as on an international level. They promote self-empowerment in fee agreements, they are meant to prevent the practice of undercutting fees. But they are also a political instrument together to call for the appropriate funding of art and culture. Since 2016, the IG Bildende Kunst has been campaigning for adequate remuneration for artistic labour with the demand “Pay the artist now!”

Guidelines and Fee Chart for fair remuneration in the visual arts

The IG Bildende Kunst and Tiroler Künstler:innenschaft jointly developed non-binding recommendations for fair remuneration in the visual arts. Two fundamental documents resulted from this process: the Guidelines and the Fee Chart. The additional FAQ document offers in-depth background information and further considerations regarding the calculation of fees.

The Guidelines focus on activities in exhibition operations and recommend non-binding base rates, such as for the participation in an exhibition or an artist talk. The Fee Chart supplements the Guidelines and recommends hourly rates for a wide range of artistic activities, in particular for artistic production and planning individual projects – as a calculation aid for artists and everyone working with visual artists professionally.
